THE TRADITIONAL RED SHIRT PLEDGE UNIFORM -- BEANIE, SHMOE, WHITE SHIRT AND RED TIE -- WAS PROBABLY INTRODUCED IN 1940-41. THE OUTFIT, INCLUDING THE HOMEMADE PLEDGE PADDLE, PROBABLY WAS PATTERNED AFTER THE FRESHMAN ORIENTATION OUTFIT POPULAR AT THE TIME.
